iNaturalist is a ‘citizen science’ project. This means that every nature enthusiast can help scientists to document (wild) animals and plants. The project’s aim is to make observations about biodiversity, which are then gathered and shared on an international platform.
For that reason, iNaturalist was designed as a social network, where you can collaborate and exchange information with other ‘citizen scientists’, naturalists (scientists who study natural history), and biologists. The goal, then, is to make observations of wild animal and plant species and to upload these observations to the iNaturalist app or website, so that they can be shared with the global community.
Image recognition software, as well as a team of naturalists and biologists, will help to identify the species as precisely as possible.
The iNaturalist project is coordinated by the Naturmusée here in Luxembourg.
